Federal Courts, Chinese Brush Painting & Book Binding Workshops Coming Soon

The LifeLong Learning Organization of San Marcos (LLL) and Price Center are teaming up again to present three new workshops beginning next month. Dr. Kenneth Ward, a Texas State professor of political science and Michael Hannon, local calligrapher, poet, and illuminator, will each teach the programs beginning in Oct. Ward will lead a five-week workshop on the Federal Court System and Landmark US Supreme Court Cases beginning Oct. 4. Hannon will teach two separate 6-week workshops exploring Chinese Brush Painting and Book Binding beginning Oct. 8 & 9 respectively. All three workshops require advance registration and payment of a small fee.

The Federal Court System will be primarily discussion-based, driven by the interests of the class members and guided by Dr. Ward. Aspects/concepts to be clarified will include the structure and function of the federal court system, judicial politics, and Supreme Court decisions of current interest. All five sessions will take place on consecutive Thursdays from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m., beginning Oct. 4. Registration is $25

Chinese Brush Painting will cover the history, traditions, and techniques of Chinese brush painting. The Chinese painting tradition stretches back directly to the Tang Dynasty and has a great and wide-ranging history. The main styles of brush painting will be covered: ink painting in both loose and detailed styles, painting with and in watercolors-- including with ink and color outlines, and “boneless (without outlines). Michael will also explain and show the basic techniques of wet mounting of finished paintings. All six sessions will take place on Mondays from 10 a.m. – Noon beginning Oct. 8. There is a $45 registration fee and a materials list available for participants.

Book Binding will cover practical ways to hand bind booklets and books with both hard and soft covers such as pamphlet bind with soft cover, and Japanese stab bindings. Ways to bind pages on a central fold, and to bind pages along one edge will also be explored. Binding in signatures, as most traditional western books have been bound, will be discussed, but will not spend a lot of time on this as the technique requires specialized equipment to be practical. The class will meet on six consecutive Tuesdays from 2 – 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 9. A $45 registration fee is required and a materials list is available.
