Dedication Celebrates 'Wild Harmony' New Stair Mosaic at Price Center

A group of city officials, members of the San Marcos Arts Commission, the Price Center Arts Committee, mosaic artist Carmen Rangel, and a number of guests gathered Thursday, June 25 to officially dedicate Wild Harmony, the new mosaic installation on the front steps of the Price Center. The latest public art project funded by the San Marcos Arts Commission is the first public mosaic on stairs in San Marcos and features a beautiful display of local pollinators and cacti blooms.

After brief remarks from the city and the Price Center, Carmen Rangel shared her story on the creation of the piece. She explained she had been doing mosaic murals for a few years and wanted to do one on some steps. When she saw the Call for Proposals, for the project, she was thrilled and hoped she would be selected. She explained her inspiration came from visiting the site and taking in all the natural beauty of the garden and wildlife she saw while here.

"I wanted to honor the space and plant something of my own in the garden," she said. "I've always loved cactus blooms so that seemed like the perfect contribution from me," she added.

The event concluded with a group photo of the key individuals who helped make the mosaic happen. The addition of the mosaic brings the total public artworks on or near the Price Center and in the Garden to 26. Stop by anytime for a closer look at all of it!
