VETERANS DAY EVENT GIVES VOICE TO THE STORIES OF LOCAL VETS, FAMILIES

October 30, 2017

As we honor their service this Veterans Day, we should also take a moment to hear their voices. On Nov. 10, veterans and their families will come together at the Price Center in San Marcos to share their personal stories about service, sacrifice, and how their experiences have shaped the way they live their lives.

“The Veteran’s Voice Project” is organized by Down South Word of Mouth (DSWM), which facilitates free storytelling workshops and produces live storytelling events for various populations in Central Texas.

“This evening will be about how their experience changed their perspective on the world around them, how they view themselves, and how their service transformed them in some way,” said DSWM Founder Brooke Pillifant. “We mean to honor their service, but more than that, we want people to hear how those around them have served and to connect with them by hearing their stories.”

DSWM works with specific audiences using storytelling as narrative therapy.  They have recently partnered with the Mermaid Society, which promotes awareness of local river conservation and community as well as the Hays County Veterans Treatment Court.  They continue to provide weekly storytelling classes to incarcerated veterans in Travis county.
